Acciaroli is the perfect example of how a tiny village inhabited almost exclusively by fishermen and their families can be transformed so as to become an exclusive bathing resort. Five Sails and a European Blue Flag certify to the purity of the water which laps the coast of the Cilento. A fleeting glance is sufficient to understand why Acciaroli has become such a sought after holiday destination, blessed as it is with long beaches, a crystal clear sea and a picturesque harbour, this latter the heart of the town's social life.
During the summer numerous bars and restaurants open up in the harbour area, from where customers enjoy fabulous views of the luxurious yachts and the shimmering Tyrrhenian sea. Among Acciaroli's most famous visitors, we find the writer Ernest Hemingway who, it is said, based the character of Santiago found in his "The Old Man and the Sea" on one of the town's fishermen. Whilst staying in Acciaroli, holiday makers should take the opportunity to visit the National Park of Cilento and the Vallo di Diano.
