An ancient fishing village, a tiny jewel nestling in the Park of Cilento
Santa Maria di Castellabate is a picturesque fishing village on the Tyrrhenian coast, south of the Amalfi coast, in the heart of the Cilento. Also known by the name of Isca delle Chitarre, Santa Maria, together with the fraction of San Marco, are part of the comune of Castellabate, an ancient locality cited in the verses which Homer dedicated to this splendid stretch of coast.
Castellabate has been declared World Heritage site by UNESCO and appears in the rankings for the most beautiful Italian village.
The historic center of Santa Maria di Castellabate is characterised by its charming fishermen's cottages, narrow lanes, and shady porticoes, all of which face on to the little harbour. With its crystal clear waters, awarded the European Blue Flag, the seaside village of Santa Maria di Castellabate is now a much-loved tourist destination.
The surrounding National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano incorporate breathtaking land and seascapes, home to world renowned archaeological sites such as the nearby Agropoli and Paestum.
Its favorable position, within easy reach of the cities of Naples and Salerno, has meant that Santa Maria di Castellabate has greatly developed over the last few years, so as to become a tourist destination of great repute, a place where to enjoy tradition, culture, fine food, and a stunningly beautiful natural environment.
