Tramonti from "intra montes", name which perfectly describes its sheltered position between two mountains) was one of the most wealthy sea ports in the whole of Italy and home town to some of the country's most influential families. The town reached the apex of its power during the era of the Republic of Amalfi, and many of the strikingly beautiful palaces and churches in the thirteen districts of Tramonti date back to that period.
Flavio Gioia, inventor of the sailor's compass, named the North wind, the "tramontana" after the village. A great number of cultural and religious events are held in the town each summer.
